Writing for Beginners

Where to Start

You may wonder where to start learning or teaching how to write in English. One strategy is to take a simple writing prompt and break it down into the questions which will help create a paragraph.

For example, “Write about your self,” or, “Give your self-introduction.”

What is your name?
My name is George.

Where are you from?
I am from Texas.

How old are you?
I am 26 years old.

What is your favorite food?
I like turkey sandwiches.

Why did you want to come to New Zealand?
I am studying here.

When did you come here?
I moved here in March.

When is your birthday?
My birthday is June 27.

Next, put the answers together in a way which makes sense. Add some extra phrases if you think they will help people know more or understand better.

Hello. My name is George. I’m from Texas. I am a 26 year-old student. I moved to New Zealand in March of this year. My favorite food is turkey sandwiches. I like playing and listening to music. I also enjoy playing video games when I have free time, but I am usually too busy. I like travel, history, and learning new languages. Nice to meet you.
